DECORATION STREET
Middle East TV is proud to announce the launch of its new UK style soap opera based on the goings on in your everyday international school. Entitled Decoration Street, it follows the fortunes of a group of new staff from their arrival in September to their departure. For some of them, this means a full two years, for a few it means until the end of their failed probationary periods, but for two it means straight after the first pay cheque.
The main characters in the show will be as follows:
Johnny Prince: Johnny is the school’s Headteacher. A former rugby referee, he controls his school with a mixture of good humour and bald aggression. Don’t be fooled by the grand-dad cardigans, this man means business.
Derek Mersey: Derek (or Del as he will commonly be referred to) is out of his depth. Promoted way beyond his level of competence, he spends his time making up excuses for jobs that have gone wrong or deadlines that he’s not met. His American Indian name would be Gitchesithesystem. Del is one of the Deputy Headteachers.
Davide Chaud: Born of French parents, Davide is from Brighton and has been at the school for only a year. Davide is in charge of the Primary School and has earned something of a reputation for interior design.
Gareth Beecham: The fixed smile on his face makes him one of the show’s most difficult to read characters. Gareth is renowned for his surprise visits to lessons, his damning assessments of colleagues’ abilities and his inability to turn up to his own lessons on time. Gareth is the last of the Senior Management Team.
The main settings are as follows:
The Staffroom- As you will quickly see, this is almost a misnomer. It has lots of room but is rarely visited by staff, all of whom spend their non-contact time avoiding management snoopers. It is though, the setting for the morning briefing that features at the start of every show.
The Pantry- No, not a place where the food is kept but a hotbed of gossip and cynicism. Well, that’s how the snoopers see it but, as regular viewers will soon discover, it’s the one place that can help you maintain you sense of self-worth and help you keep a grip on reality.
The Head’s Office – The place for plotting and scheming that is referred to as The War Office by Pantry Folk!
